New Leash on Life with GPAEC

UPDATE: We did not get the large grant for which we applied. We had some awesome competition, and congratulate them!  So now, we need to gain funding in order to continue this program, which by all measurements has been a success thus far! We are applying for other grants, as well, but we need an influx of cash soon so we can start class number 3!

Our 2nd class graduates on November 23, with all 4 dogs passing their evaluation with flying colors.  2 of the 4 dogs are spoken for and will be adopted either at graduation or shortly thereafter. 2 more are still available for adoption.

We need to buy food, pay for vetting, flea and tick prevention, toys, crates, treats, and the training paperwork involved in the program, just for starters. Greyhound Pets of America Emerald Coast (GPAEC) and the Okaloosa Correctional Institution Work Camp are partnering to bring together a Dog Handler Program!

GPAEC will provide retired racing greyhounds, crates, flea and tick prevention, grooming, vetting, and food for the program.

Okaloosa Corrections Work Camp will provide cleared inmates to serve as dog handlers. They will work under the guidance of a certified trainer to help each dog reach their Canine Good Citizenship (CGC). Once the dog graduates from the program, he or she will be offered for adoption into a loving pet home.

The inmates benefit  through having a positive program in which to be involved.  The greyhounds benefit by virtue of having a foster home and gaining their CGC rating. Talk about a win-win!  The adoption fee for these dogs will help pay the on-going expenses for A New Leash on Life.
