A kid at heart, dog-lover, and former marathon runner, our dad, Don, is a vibrant and caring person. He is a lover of superheroes and sports, music and comic books; yet, above all else, he is a family man.
Our dad was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia on July 15th. He checked into the hospital a few days later to begin his first round of chemotherapy. Throughout the first three weeks of treatment, he was doing great - walking miles in the hallway (even lapping our mom!) and in good, positive spirits.
On August 8th, our dad contracted a fast-moving, rare bacterial infection that caused multi-organ failure. As family and other loved ones poured into his hospital room to support him, the doctors told us he would not survive the night. Two months later, our dad continues to fight. The doctors call him the "miracle man."
His kidneys and liver are very damaged, and he is receiving constant dialysis. A bone marrow biopsy showed that his leukemia is in remission, but his bone marrow is empty and non-existent. We are hoping for his bone marrow to regenerate to help his body heal. It will be a long road to recovery.
We watch our mom spend hours upon hours in the hospital at our dad's side and admire her strength, perseverance, and overwhelming love for our father. Our dad's hospital bill is in excess of $2 million, and although we have insurance, out-of-pocket medical expenses are piling up. Our mom is unable to work full-time because of her time spent in the hospital. With the additional loss of our father's wages, our family is struggling to pay the bills, and we are reaching out to you to help us through this difficult time. We are lucky to have a dad as amazing as ours, and if he is still fighting, so are we!
