Hi everyone! My name is Ben Cox, I’m from Australia and I've been living and working in Colombia since 2012. I'm a huge animal lover and I dedicate a big part of my life towards helping animals in need.
I originally came to Colombia to work for an Australian foundation which works with poor communities to help children learn English for free or for a very low cost, and I am very proud of the work we did to help hundreds of Colombian kids. I am no longer working for that foundation, but I have remained in Colombia because I can see many opportunities for me to help people and animals in need.
I have a very strong passion for helping animals, and after seeing so many stray dogs and cats in the streets, many of them hungry, sick or suffering, I felt I needed to take action and make an impact by not only working towards fixing this problem, but by educating Colombia's youth about the importance and responsibility of caring for animals to prevent it from continuing to happen.
How am I making a difference?
Seeing animals treated with such disrespect and cruelty, to me is simply unacceptable, and I am fighting every day to change people's attitudes and behaviours towards animals. I fundraise with minimal administration costs which means I can use the money raised to directly help animals in need.
If you love animals and would like to help me make a true, lasting impact to the lives of many of Colombia's street dogs and cats, please support me by making a donation, and know that 100% of the funds will be used to purchase food, veterinary and medical products, bedding materials, to pay for dog and cat sterilizations, or to help me with school education goals.
What have I done so far?
Every 3-4 months since 2016 I have organised fundraisers to collect donations for the local animal shelters. These donations come from people living in my city, from my students, and from international donations.
I also organise groups of my students to visit the local shelters to bring awareness to the problem, to assist with donations, and to adopt some of the dogs and cats.
I have also temporarily adopted dogs that were very sick and, at my own personal expense, paid for their medical treatments until they were healthy enough to be permanently adopted by caring families.
But this is really just the beginning.
What are my long term plans and goals?
It is my dream to open more animal shelters in the next 1-2 years or sooner, to reduce the number of stray animals on the streets, and to help find them homes. And it's my goal to start an education program to be distributed to schools, which will educate students on responsible pet ownership and care. Prevention is the best cure for animal homelessness. I can make real change happen with your help.
How will your donation help?
In Colombia, the dollar goes very far.
A $5 donation will buy approximately 5kgs of food which will feed 4 dogs or 10 cats for 2-3 days, or buy one flea/tick treatment.
A $10 donation will help with treatments for parasites, food and/or medical and veterinary supplies.
A $20 donation buys bedding and greater quantities of food and medical supplies.
$50 pays for sterilisation and post-surgery care for 1 male dog or cat.
$60 pays for sterilisation and post-surgery care for 1 female dog or cat.
$100 quite simply makes a massive difference, and guarantees food and good health / care for many of the shelter animals. If you donate this amount, you can choose how you would like the money to help (food, sterilisations or something else).
