Help Matthew Beat Cancer

This little boy's name is Matthew. On February 28, 2015 (almost three weeks after his 3rd birthday), he was diagnosed with a Retinoblastoma – a rare form of eye cancer that begins in the retina. A large tumor had grown on the back of his right eye and, as a result, Matthew had to have his eye removed.

A couple of weeks after the tumor and eye were sent off for testing, his mother was informed that it was in Matthew's best interest to proceed with chemotherapy. Matthew has already completed his first round of chemo and, though he did very well in the hospital, is now dealing with the harsh side effects of the treatment.

Sandra, Matthew’s mother, is a single parent with a full-time job. As a single parent, she needs to take time off every time Matthew goes through his chemo treatment. Sandra also needs to take time off each time Matthew gets sick, which is and will be quite often considering the amount of damage chemotherapy does to the immune system. If Matthew’s temperature runs 100.4 or higher, he will need to be rushed to the hospital.

The chemotherapy was ordered as a preemptive measure against cancer cells that may have spread from the tumor. Matthew will likely also suffer hearing loss in the right ear due to treatment and will also more than likely develop leukemia sometime in his lifetime. As of 6/24/15, he has already been through two MRIs, a CT scan, and a spinal tap.

At just three years of age, Matthew is a joyous ball of energy that has already been burdened with tough challenges. Just last year, he lost a close family member to another terrible ailment. Other difficulties, which we would prefer not to elaborate on out of respect of the family’s privacy, have also made his young life and Sandra’s first years of parenthood rather difficult. Each day Sandra has to stay with Matthew is a chunk of her income she loses.

Matthew has the benefit of being surrounded by many people who love him and support in the best way they can. Unfortunately, financial support is rather difficult to come by. The purpose of this GoFundMe account is to support Sandra take on Matthew’s medical expenses as she leads him through his treatment. The fund will cover what the insurance does not and will help pay for whatever he may need in the immediate future (prosthetic eye, hearing aid, etc.) At this time, we’re still sorting out the claims and costs and will update the details as soon as they become evident.

This account has been setup by Matthew’s Godparents, Natalie (Sandra’s niece) and Aaron. 100% of funds not used to support Matthew's treatment will go to the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio Foundation to help support other children and their families who are also dealing with awful diseases.

Thank you for taking the time to read Matthew's story and thank you to all of those who have donated and shared his story. Our family appreciates all the love and support we have received during this hard time.
