Help Mary Help Refugees in Greece

Donation protected
Dear friends and family,

From July 22nd - August 4th 2018, I will be traveling to Greece to work with the Ritsona Refugee Camp in Greece with the I Am You humanitarian organization. I need your support! Please click on the link below to donate. Thank you so much for your help.

I’m thrilled to share with you that alongside established U.S. and Syrian film, tv, and Broadway actors, directors, producers, and composers, I’ll be the musical director for the musical accompaniment to a multi-lingual production of Shakespeare’s 'The Tempest'. Both displaced people and the actors in the creative team will be performing. I’m happy to help these people express their stories, volunteer in the camp teaching English, give my time and skills where needed, and further the mission of I Am You.

I am raising funds to help cover my personal costs to work on this project. Generous support from some individuals already covers my flight, accommodations, and breakfast and lunch, plus a small stipend for rehearsals in New York City, two weeks of work in the camp, and compiling and editing footage .

I am pausing my music teaching, songwriting, and performance work at home in New York City so that I can participate in this project and am asking for your assistance to help me pay for vaccines, travel insurance, international health insurance, transportation via subway to-and-from the airport, meals during my stay, and personal expenses. I am asking you for your help so I can recoup the losses I'll incur for this project.

I want to share the experience so that it goes beyond my own heart and soul and so that others can get a personal picture of this refugee experience and the power of the arts to help.

I plan on documenting the process through videos, photos, songwriting, music recordings, and blogging in a mini multimedia documentary. I will work within I AM YOU’s guidelines for photographic and video consent to protect the Ritsona residents’ wishes, and I feel most people want to share their stories and express themselves through songwriting, singing, theater, visual art, writing, and interviews.

I'll post updates on my Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram pages (@maryalouette), my website’s blog (www.maryalouette.com/blog), and my newsletter during my stay in Ritsona so you can see where your donations are going.

Europe is currently facing the greatest refugee and humanitarian crisis since the Second World War. The Ritsona Camp currently hosts approximately 750 residents, and is full to its capacity for now. Approximately one third of the community members are children below the age of 12. The Ritsona community is made up of a majority Syrian-Kurdish population, but also has minorities from other ethnicities. The camp is home to small and large families and some single people.

The exact numbers are fluid, as community members are able to arrive and leave as they please. Since the end of October 2016 children in the ages of 6-15 from Ritsona have been enrolled into the Greek school. The Ministry of Education intend to keep enrolling children into the Greek schools, and furthermore to support the camp community with pre-schools, either on- or off-site. The residents have also since the beginning of November 2016 moved into ISO-boxes, which has improved living conditions in Ritsona, in comparison to the previous shelters, which were tents. However, the location of the camp is remote, and access to transport is limited to that provided by small organizations with private donations.

I AM YOU is an international, non-political, non-profit organization focusing on human-to-human aid through coordinated relief projects. I AM YOU began as a volunteer emergency response to the humanitarian crisis unfolding on the shores of Lesvos, Greece in the fall of 2015. Over 1 million men, women and children risked their lives to reach Europe, making the dangerous journey across the Aegean Sea. Of these, 3,735 were missing, believed drowned. (UNHCR January 4, 2016).

I AM YOU protects the human rights of displaced people who have fled from war and persecution through the power of skilled volunteers and experts. We believe that the displaced people we work with deserve to have the same rights as any other human being, and deserve to be treated with respect. I AM YOU remains neutral and impartial and do not take part in or promote activism of any kind.

I AM YOU runs several specific projects related to informal education, youth recreation, hospital transportation, camp support, and also assist in many other day-to-day tasks as required. I AM YOU responds quickly to situations and utilises the diverse skills amongst our team members to ensure displaced people receive the best service.

Right now, I AM YOU’s work focuses on two refugee camps in Greece, approximately 1 hour north of Athens, which are Ritsona and Oinofyta. I AM YOU has built relationships with the authorities, NGOs, independent volunteers and others in order to support the smooth running of these camps, assist in daily activities, and run long-term projects for the people residing in the camps.

Additionally, I AM YOU aims to empower displaced people and community members by supporting them in raising their voices and shares their stories through case studies, photography, film and by inviting VIPs to visit and volunteer.

I feel so called towards this opportunity. It’d be so life-affirming for everyone. Imagine if someone had just one moment or a minute of freedom and joy, forgetting everything and just singing and playing music. I know how bringing music and theater to these displaced people’s lives will reaffirm the feeling that their lives, hopes, and dreams matter.

Please share this campaign and help me spread the word!

THANK YOU!!!
