Many thanks to those who have donated old dog cages for my decomposition experiments! They will be put to good, albeit smelly, use!

So, a quick update...I have recently been recently engrossed in contacting various cadaver dog handlers around the country, and the world! This includes being introduced into the world of drowned victim search dogs...Dogs trained to remain poised scenting over the edge of the boat to locate victims beneath the water. I myself was sceptical until seeing it with my own eyes! Just another example to the amazing feats dogs can be trained to achieve. Pretty amazing really. I would highly recommend the book "Search Dogs and Me" by Neil Powell (who I have had the honour to meet during a search for a missing person) for anyone interested in the work of search dogs. This man is a legend and has trained up a huge array of specialist search dogs including cadaver dogs. I will endeavour to post more regular updates!

I have recently been accepted to do a PhD at Cranfield University on completion of my degree in Forensic and Analytical Science BSc (Hons) at Sheffield Hallam University. The thesis is entitled the "Identification and Quantification of Gaseous Products in Relation to Cadaver Dog Efficiency" which, in layman's terms, is basically focussed around the study of decomposition to essentially extend knowledge in locating human remains. Cranfield University is lucky to have a research facility (one of only two in the country) where decomposition of large mammals, such as pigs, can be studied.

Whilst using dogs for locating human remains is commonplace, a lot of the science is simply taken for granted with little being known about how dogs actually "work" i.e. what are they scenting?

This knowledge is essential to help make use of the dog's skills to the best of their ability and to perhaps make improvements to the training programs used presently.

So what is the catch?

Due to the extensive cuts in forensic funding in the UK the project has been offered on a "no fee no stipend" agreement. I have accepted this due to my interest in the area with it having the potential to have a major impact on locating victims, of murder, accident and disaster internationally. I particularly hope this work will be able to assist the police, military, and help affected families to find closure.

Therefore, I am attempting to find alternative means of funding (as well as holding down a part-time job) to overcome my deficit for the duration of the PhD (3 years)- which is where this page comes in!

I would be incredibly grateful for any donation big or small. If you would like to find out any more information about me or the project please feel free to contact me at lcirish@hotmail.co.uk

Please note, any excess money I receive will be donated to charity.
