Dear Friends,
I am writing to ask for your support for a truly special cause for children with cancer in Mongolia.
The cost of medical care is high in Mongolia, and patients from needy families are often unable to receive the most basic treatment procedures, let alone optimal care. Since the 1990s, Mongolia´s economy has transitioned into a market-based economy, and vulnerable groups, such as children and disabled and elderly persons, often lack resources to obtain adequate treatment and cure for their illnesses. Although the government is actively seeking solutions to social problems, health education and preventative medical check-ups are sorely needed and often lacking. Sadly there has been a surge in the incidence of cancer during the past ten to fifteen years. Eighty-six percent of the patients who have been diagnosed with cancer have been in the terminal stage, meaning that a chance for cure is slim. Many of these patients are children. The reasons for this high rate of cancer have not been determined, but some studies indicate the diet of Mongolians - - especially their food preservation techniques - - may have a connection with causes of some cancers. The Mongolian Cultural Organization (MCO: http://www.mco-michigan.org/home) at the University of Michigan is a non-profit student led organization.
MCO's goal is to raise money to ship a 40 FOOT CONTAINER full of medical equipment and supplies to the Children's Cancer Treatment Center in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. We've submitted an application to the The World Medical Relief (http://www.worldmedicalrelief.org/) and it was approved. The Anglofreight shipping company generously agreed to ship WMR's donated medical equipment and supplies for free. However, we still need to pay an $5,000 service fee to the WMR.
MCO is a certified 501(c)(3) so your donation is tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law. With your help, I know we can make a difference for the thousands of children and families in Mongolia who will have their lives changed.
