Love for Isair and Family

We started this account for our dear friends, Julie and Jose, who live in Seaside, Oregon, with their three children and beloved dog. Their six year old son, Isair(pictured here with his big sister, Maryliz)was all set to start first grade this fall, when things took a turn. A visit to our local hospital for what was thought to be a stomach bug turned into an ambulance ride to OHSU Doernbecker's Children's hospital in Portland, where suspicions were confirmed that Isair has leukemia. The days that followed were a roller coaster for he and his family as they tried to crank out lemonade from every lemon...they will not be able to come home for at least a month, followed by three years of chemotherapy. Isair will lose his hair, it will grow back, he will lose it again. Before Isair is healthy enough to return home, Julie and Jose have to find a new place to live, as they need a mold-free environment for the best chances of recovery. School is iffy, most likely neccessitating a tutor; and with the interruptions of frequent trips to Portland for chemo, and its consequences, the next three years will be a long haul...
The good news: Isair is in the most capable hands in the country at OHSU, and both he and his family are receiving excellent care. The best news: Isair is responding well to preliminary treatments and has a 90% chance of recovery.
When I asked Julie if she was okay with us trying to raise funds, she said that she and Jose were just prepared to work really, really hard...which broke my heart as much as the diagnosis.
The tyranny of illness doesn't need to be made harder by the compounding effects of lost wages, frequent treatments requiring travel, and the costs of moving.
This young family is humble, self-responsible, and kind, they are strong and faithful and generous. They deserve every element of goodness the world has to offer.
We ask, that as friends and community, we can make this a little easier on them...any kindness is deeply appreciated, including your healing thoughts and prayers.
