NY Acting Study Dream

Donation protected
Who are you?

My name is Lore (pronounced "Laura") and I'm an aspiring actor from Melbourne, Australia. I've wanted to act since I was seven years old and have only recently plucked up the courage to pursue that dream. I've never studied acting and never thought I would be able to afford to until a friend encouraged me to audition for the World Championships of Performing Arts in Hollywood. Thanks to crowdfunding, I was able to go and represent Australia as an actor and musician. That in itself was a huge challenge, which you can read about here:

So, what's all this then?

This is me playing a prisoner for the World Championships of Performing Arts, July 2014, where I first met one of the staff of the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts (NYCDA). Upon speaking with the staff/past students and researching the conservatory, I felt a connection I have never felt before: I became determined to study there.

This is me being an alien for the same event, which is the original piece that got me invited to an interview with NYCDA. Unfortunately, I wasn't offered a scholarship at the event as I ha hoped, so I asked the staff what I had to do in order to study with them, scholarship or not. I was then invited to perform both this and the above monologues for a Skype audition and, to my delight, I was offered a $10,000 scholarship!

So, why do you need our help if you've been offered a scholarship?

I'm so glad you asked! I need your help because the total course costs per year amount to just over $30,000, not to mention flights from Australia to New York ($4,000 for me and my future husband) and living expenses (another $28,000)...that's a lot of money!

Speaking of my future husband who you can see in the picture above, we're getting married just before heading to New York, just to add even more financial complexity. This website will probably end up being our registry.

I will be going to New York and studying this incredible course no matter what. I have never been so determined to do anything in my life. Hopefully, my poor husband will be able to find a job over there to support us (he's still studying teaching in Melbourne at the moment), although we'll still need to take out loans and so on. There is a chance we'll end up broke, homeless or missing meals and people think I'm crazy, but if I don't follow my heart how can I expect to inspire others to do the same? If I don't pursue my dreams, how can I encourage and strengthen those lacking in hope?

Your dreams?

Yes, I have dreams. Big dreams. My biggest and most daring dream is to play the first female Doctor in the BBC "Doctor Who" series one day, a dream I've been too afraid to pursue for many years. I've finally taken my first big step by competing in the World Championships for Performing Arts, and the video I filmed to fundraise for that tells you all about this dream and why it's important (and there is even a Dalek and a Sock Dragon involved):

Okay, that's nice, but what do we get out of it?

All I can offer you is my time and skills. I am already a professional cellist, teacher and composer and music will always be one of my passions. It's just that acting is a fire which burns deeper. All of these skills are at your service, simply contact me through this website.

By helping me, you are helping others; I can promise you that this is not an end in itself. There are many reasons why I am determined to be a great actor and one of the biggest driving factors for me is because I want to deeply connect with people and inspire them to be the best they can be. This includes the people I work with, the people I befriend and the people I meet on the street; if I do achieve any measure of fame or influence, I pledge to use it for the good of others (unlike certain famous people I can think of).

I will never forget you. All the kind people who contribute to my journey will be in my heart forever and my door will always be open to you. Everything I do will be fuelled by love and gratitude, I will do my utmost to make you proud.

What if we're broke too?

That's absolutely fine. There are many ways to support me, including sharing my story with everyone you know and getting in touch with me through this site if you'd like to encourage me personally.
