Liz Disbrow Medical Expenses

Donation protected
Our friend Liz Disbrow was recently diagnosed with an extremely rare disease—malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.  Unfortunately, the average life expectancy after diagnosis is less than one year.  This disease is so rare that there are only a few specialists in the country who treat this type of cancer.  While there is no cure for the disease, Liz is hoping to find a doctor or clinical trial that would prolong her life.

I first met Liz in 2000 when she worked with us at the Des Moines Police Department.  She worked here about five years and then left for other employment.  Ten years ago, when she was only 31, she was diagnosed with breast cancer.  She endured bilateral mastectomies, multiple surgeries, radiation, and a year of chemo.  Liz and her husband, Ed, were advised by her doctor that she could not have children after going through chemo, so she had her eggs harvested and frozen.  After her treatment was complete, she and Ed went on to have three babies within 13 months—Isla just turned seven, and twins, Aden and Ava, will soon be six.

Her big, happy family is now staggering from this latest blow.  Liz is not one who will sugar-coat anything, and she and Ed are trying to prepare her family for what is looming ahead.  At the same time, she will be traveling soon to Chicago, Houston, Washington, DC, and Philadelphia for consultations with doctors who offer treatment for this horrible disease.  Her strongest hope is that she will be here to help her children grow up.

Liz had just started a job she loved at Iowa State University when she was diagnosed.  She has no sick or vacation leave accrued.  Unable to work, she does not receive short-term or long-term disability.  We are starting this Go Fund me account to assist Liz’s family as she travels to doctor consultations and for treatment for this dreadful disease, along with other costs such as childcare for their children.  Childcare for her three children costs about $1,300 per month.

Please consider a donation to help provide moral and financial support as they go through this difficult time.  Please pray for Liz and her family!
