“The Backstory”
On February 4, 2018, the two Weary children, aged 14 and 18, were working on a school photography project when they were targeted because of their skin color. A person came out of Harvey’s Lounge on Highway 99, holding a baseball bat and demanding the teens to leave the property while using the “n-word.” The event is still under investigation by the FBI as a potential hate crime.
Darnesha and Erwin Weary, the parents of the traumatized teens, are long-time residents and local leaders who contribute greatly to our community. For the last 18 years, Darnesha has promoted principles of harmony, leadership and discipline through the arts and community service in her role as Executive Director of a youth program. Erwin’s dual role as Business and Music Director lets him make an impact by teaching youth how to channel negative behaviors into creative expression, ultimately supporting a 100% high school graduation rate and 85% college acceptance rate for the program.
The Weary family supports and strengthens our community—it is time for us to rally around them in their time of need.
“The Needs”
Being the victim of a racially based verbal attack is scary, and the Weary children are living every day with the memory and anxiety of having a stranger with a baseball bat threaten them because of their skin color. The family’s choice to speak up is brave and commendable. However, they also fear retaliation for taking a public stance against racism and bigotry.
Our goal is to help the Weary family with the following costs:
Trauma counseling, especially for the 14 year-old, who is suffering from loss of sleep and PTSD-like symptoms. Estimated cost: $800-$1200.
A basic home security system including sensor lights for the property perimeter and cameras. Estimated cost: $400-$600.
Attorney fees. Estimated cost: $300-$500.
Our first target goal is $1500.
