Gartconner School Knitting Club

Donation protected
I am Jillian, a mother of two children at Gartconner Primary  School in East Dunbartonshire, and I run the Knit After School Club with the help of another knitting mum.

Children at Gartconner are aged 4 to 12 years and can benefit from a hobby like knitting in many ways as they develop. Knitting is a fun activity that encourages creativity, improves fine motor coordination and teaches patience and persistence in working towards a goal. Planning a project requires children to utilise their imagination and to apply arithmetic.

I offer the opportunity for children to dye their own yarn using food colouring. This is great fun and teaches the use of colours as well as some basic chemistry and understanding of fibre properties. They are then be able to use their own unique yarn to knit their chosen project.

In addition to hand knitting the children can also use hand operated circular knitting machines to create items like scarves and hats. This is particularly rewarding for younger children who struggle with hand knitting and they are all fascinated to understand the way in which the machines work.

I am appealing for funds to buy some undyed wool yarn as the children love hand dyeing. Funds already raised have bought us a hand wound knitting machine, some child sized knitting needles and two sets of plastic crochet hooks. Thank you for your support.
