Teaching Refugees in Lebanon

Donation protected
Originally from Australia, I have been a teacher and college Principals for the past 25 years.  Since February 2016, I have been volunteering in the refugee camps on the Syria-Lebanon border, assisting the NGO Triumphant Mercy and establishing an education program among the 2 million Syrian refugees in Lebanon.

I am based in Zahle, Bekaa Valley.  The UN estimates that there are currently more than 1,5 million refugees in this area.  UNHCR estimates that there are approximately 400,000 school aged Syrian children in Lebanon, with the overwhelming majority unable to access education.

The main obstacles for providing education to Syrian refugees include a lack of transportation to schools, high dropout rate, unable to enter the curriculum at the appropriate age, a shortage of teachers.  Many children have not had access to education for up to three years, creating a critically high illiteracy rate. Children are furthered hindered from being able to enter local schools in Lebanon, due to a vastly different curriculum and students being unable to cope with many subjects being taught in English. A recent assessment of the situation confirmed the urgent need for English language programs.

As a result of this urgent need, under the auspices of Triumphant Mercy, we have established the Hope English language program in the refugee camps of the Bekaa Valley, Lebanon.

All money goes towards covering some of my practical living expenses to enable me to continue to live and serve in the region.  This money also goes directly towards purchasing much needed education resources.

Your support will enable me to continue to provide education to Syrian refugees in Lebanon.
