Organic farm school

Help us save Cherry Ridge Farm from foreclosure.  Currently the bank does not have a clear title to our farm, but they advertised to proceed to auction January 29.

We have so many goals and plans for education and community assets, we cannot let this happen.  Read a little about our farm and what we do.  Help us save this gem.  Help us keep giving back to the community.  Don't the bank win in their illegal actions.

Our farm is located in a very quiet, beautiful valley with mountain views and mixed hardwood forest in the north end of Rockbridge county Virginia.  We have been farming here for over 35 years practicing strict organic methods.  The farm is 40 acres but we generally only cultivate about 10 acres in various crops including most all vegetables, Shiitake mushrooms, hops, a few apples, peaches, blackberries, blueberries and strawberries.

Our farm is transitioning toward a teaching facility, processing value-added products and our skilled family operates sawmill that uses green and salvaged wood.  We only speak English, but have had several foreign interns that spoke enough English to learn and grow with us.  We built a timber frame bunkhouse for the interns, have plans for a composting toilet and have nearly completed a solar heated shower.

This past winter we started an experimental combination aquaculture and hydroponics system in the greenhouse raising all vegan fed Tilapia.  We have expanded the orchards with the addition of a few more pears, one apple and five purple peach trees.  We have a veterinarian family member that helps us understand and raise rabbits, chickens for meat and eggs and beef cattle.  The farmer is a certified teacher of biology and biochemist by trade so interns will learn far more than just digging in the dirt.  The farm is a research-oriented business with emphasis on developing alternatives to the failing unsustainable methods of the past.  We involve the interns in the financial struggles of a sustainable business as well as having them do their own educational quests.

We love to cook and prepare delicious meals using many of the seasonal vegetables grown on the farm and also routinely prepare food like bread, mustard, yogurt, syrups, jams, sauerkraut, wine, beer, vinegar and dried products.  This winter we plan to develop markets to sell these products outside of our recession impacted area.

In addition to organic projects, David makes colloidal silver which you can read more about on http://www.electro-pure.com/AboutDavidBeebe.html

We even have a space on the farm that works as a wedding venue for the community. It is located next to a beautiful river, with a handmade bridge and arch.

Providing we can save the farm, our plan is to continue to expand our education program to reach more youth seeking alternatives to our failing agriculture systems.
