On Saturday, March 28th, 2015:
Our friends , Khadija and Mimi were seriously injured when a car traveling on I-95 in Fairfield, Connecticut struck their vehicle, causing a rollover and trapping them inside. The driver that caused the accident fled the scene and has not been located. Mimi’s car broke through the guardrail and came to rest on its passenger side, nearly colliding with light pole. Khadija, the driver, was seriously injured, breaking both legs and an arm, as well as suffering internal injuries. Mimi, who was riding in the front passenger seat suffered severe damage to her left ankle, requiring reconstructive surgery. In the immediate aftermath of the accident, Mimi bravely fought to keep her best friend Khadija conscious until Fairfield and Westport firefighters and responders arrived on the scene. Asst. Chief George Gomola of Fairfield Fire Department, the incident commander, reported that “This was a serious accident and a very complicated extrication. The high level of professionalism and cooperation demonstrated by the Fairfield and Westport Fire Departments during this extrication helped to saved lives and reduced the impact of this accident on the victims.” We believe that had it not been for the efficiency and expertise of those firefighters, these two brave women might not be here today.

About K&M:
Khadija and Mimi are two dynamic women with a passion for service, education and family. They are both in their second year of AmeriCorps service with Public Allies Connecticut serving the Bridgeport community. Their days are spent tutoring and mentoring youth at Great Oaks Charter School of Bridgeport, CT.

Mimi is a lover of music, family and friends. As a product of the Bridgeport school system she is committed to helping children to reach their full potential. A recent college grad, Mimi is a major support for her brother who was also paralyzed in an accident less than a year ago.

Khadija has a vibrant positive energy. She is a doting single mother to her young son Jake.  She is also a recent grad with ties to both Connecticut and New York. She is an advocate for quality education and opportunities for all. She is also a loving and reliable friend and co-worker who works tirelessly to improve outcomes for all families.

Extent of Injuries:

Due to the serious nature of this accident, the injuries these women suffered are severe. Khadija broke both legs above the knee, and one of her arms in three places, requiring multiple surgeries to stabilize. She is currently in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Bridgeport Hospital, and It is not yet known the extent of her other injuries. Our current understanding suggests it may be some time before she can come home, and that her recovery will entail many months of physical therapy and follow up.

Mimi’s ankle was crushed in the accident, and she has had reconstructive surgery by a team of specialists at Yale New Haven Hospital. Her recovery will require months of physical therapy before she can walk again unaided.

At this point, it is clear both Khadija and Mimi will be out of work for anywhere between 3 and 9 months while they recover. During this time, there will be rent and bills to pay, groceries to buy, and medical bills for surgery, after care, and physical therapy. Jake, Khadija’s young son will need help getting to preschool, and will also need material support.

UPDATE - April 7th, 2015
Last Wednesday, Mimi was discharged from the hospital after having reconstructive surgery on her ankle. Khadija has been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit after several surgeries. She is expected to be transferred from the hospital to a rehabilitation center this week. Both women are remaining positive. They're especially grateful for all the support they've had.

A HUGE thank you to Public Allies CEO, Adren Wilson, for taking time out of his schedule to visit Connecticut and spend time with the Allies, Staff, Alumni, and most importantly Khadija & Mimi.

"Khadija and Mimi - you inspire me. I enjoyed my time with you and my Public Allies CT family! Sending beautiful, healing energy!" - Adren Wilson (@AdrenWilson)
