In July I lost my Gran, the most strong-willed and genuine person I've ever known, to a stroke. A beloved wife, mother of three, and grandmother of six, she was always happy - even when she couldn't remember us anymore. She was sassy as hell and loved a good joke (especially a dirty one). She was fiercely devoted and unapologetically honest. I always said that I thought she was invincible. I still think she is. I always will.
After she passed, I knew I had to find a way to honor my Gran. So on October 11th, I'm running the Bank of America Chicago Marathon in her memory. I'm also raising funds for the National Stroke Association. Today, I'm asking for your help. Your donation will help prevent strokes, increase resources and support, and promote stroke education in communities across America.
Every 40 seconds, someone in the US has a stroke. That's 800,000 people per year. Every 4 minutes, someone dies from one. That's 130,000 people per year. They are mothers, fathers, grandparents, children, and friends. It can happen to anyone. Strokes are a leading cause of long-term disability, leaving two-thirds of survivors to deal with serious effects such as paralysis, memory issues, and heart damage.
But 80% of strokes are preventable.
The National Stroke Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that assists stroke survivors, along with their families, caretakers, and communities by offering free programs and resources to prevent strokes, improve quality of life, and provide life-saving information. Please consider giving in memory of my Gran. In her honor, we can help patients, families, and communities. Together, we can help get survivors the care they need and preserve the legacies of those who have left us all too soon.
For those who have asked - Go Fund Me will allow me to withdraw all funds received (minus their modest 5% fee) after the marathon. I will then personally mail the funds and a card to the National Stroke Association with all donor's names. I will not retain any money!
