In 1994 Pete was diagnosed with Crohn's while in the Air Force. He has been taking medication and receiving treatment at the VA hospital in Ann Arbor for Crohns since his discharge from the military. After his service, Pete went back to school and earned his teaching degree. He has been teaching history at the IA since 1997.

Pete had a routine surgery scheduled on Monday, Dec. 22, 2014 to remove strictures  in his intestines.  On Christmas Eve he went into septic shock because his intestines came open. On Christmas day doctors performed an emergency surgery to fix the original surgery. Medications used to keep Pete's blood pressure up lead to poor circulation in his right leg. On Dec. 27th his wife Sheila was told that Pete's leg could not be saved and that he needed to have it amputated. Since then Pete has endured eight more surgeries and is finally on the road to recovery.

The family was not prepared for the sudden devastation or the series of events that occured after what they thought would be a routine surgical procedure. Both Pete and Sheila have been, and will continue to be, out of work while Pete starts his rehabilitation towards a new normal.
