Camden and Owen's TTTS journey

Donation protected
Where to start?! This journey actually begins the summer of 2011. Kevin and I decided it was time to add to our family and give Gavin a sibling. It only took us 3 months to get pregnant with Gavin so we thought the process wouldn't take long. Well it took until May of 2012 to finally get a positive test. But sadly when I went into the doctor at 8 weeks it was determined the egg was not viable and had not developed. I ended up officially miscarrying shortly after July 4th. Although the loss was very difficult we knew we needed to try again. By December we still had no luck and had begun talking to our doctor about options like Clomid. Luckily we never had to go that route because we ound out we were expecting again at the end of January!

This time when we went in for the 8 week appointment I was very nervous after what happened last time. This time the news was not only good, but shocking...TWINS!

The next few visits were good. We learned the twins were identical and MODI - meaning they are in separate sacs but share a placenta. We were told we would be monitored for twin to twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). This occurs in 15% of MODI twins and is where the twins share the placental blood supply and eventually one is too big and one is too small. I did some research but adopted the "this won't happen to us" mindset.

Well we had an appointment today that showed the twins are Stage 2 TTTS. We were referred to a specialist in Houston and will need to fly out there for possible surgery.

Besides the obvious emotional strain all of this is causing, we have no maternity insurance. We are having to pay for everything ourselves. So far my regular OB visits are $6000, the visit to the perinatal specialist was $4700. We have now learned te doctor visit in Houston is $5000 and we haven't even got to the surgery and hospital costs there. Then there are the follow ups and the actual birth. There is also a strong possibility the babies will spend time in the NICU. So, this is where our plea comes in for any help we can get from friends, family, etc. No amount is too small and we appreciate any and all. We are very humbled to be asking at all, but never imagined we would find ourselves in this position.

Love to all!

Shana, Kevin and Gavin
