On this past Sunday, March 1st, our father Kenneth passed away suddenly from a previously undiagnosed lung cancer - leaving my brother and I stunned and grieving.
Dad was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the United States Air Force, and was the first Airman of the Month at Wurtsmith Air Force Base in northern Michigan.
He was well-known around the area for his work in the automotive industry with the Reynolds & Reynolds company - developing many of the business forms that repair centers and car dealers used for decades to come.
He will be buried at Fort Custer National Cemetary with military funeral honors - the United States will do that much for us.
That sounds great, but why the GoFundMe?
Five years ago our mother passed away after a long hospitalization and medicare didn't even begin to cover those bills. This left our family deep in debt to hospitals, doctors and credit card companies. Now, on top of all of that debt, this sudden loss of our dad has left us bewildered as to what to do, and who knows what the medical expenses will be like this time.
Hence - this campaign. The ambulance, doctors, ICU, and funeral home all cost a lot of money. Even putting a simple obituary in the local paper honoring our father could run upwards of five hundred to a thousand dollars. My brother is unemployed, and I barely make enough to take care of myself, let alone deal with this sudden catastrophic loss.
