First, thank you for visiting our page. I am setting up this fundraiser to gather funds to help my dad, Mike, get spinal decompression surgery for his spinal stenosis. In plain speak, he needs surgery to repair the extensive damage to his spine.
My dad has always been my hero. Ever since I was little, my dad has been the strongest man I know. He's worked hard all his life and has always accomplished amazing things, not just with physical strength, but strength of character as well. Through his work or his dedication to his family and friends, my dad has been a hero to many. Anyone who knows my dad understands how incredibly generous he is, and that he never asks for anything in return. He has spent his life doing and giving for others, and now I want to do and give back to him.
Over the last few years, my parents have been overwhelmed with medical bills associated with my dad's debilitating back pain and procedures to relieve or fix the pain. The most costly procedure was a hip replacement surgery in 2011 which was later found to be unnecessary. During the surgery, my dad's sciatic nerve was cut, causing him to lose feeling in his left leg. After constant back pain and severe pain in his hip after the surgery, follow-up visits to the Synergy Spine Center showed that his hip never needed to be replaced. The pain was due to damage to his spine, not deterioration of his hip. So not only was his back pain not resolved, but new pain had been added. Despite tons of physical therapy, steroid injections, pain medications, and an unnecessary hip replacement, my dad's physical condition has deteriorated further. And his back pain has become more debilitating. The spine center physicians described my dad's condition as "significant central lumbar canal spinal stenosis with lumbar facet cyst formation and right paramedian disc herniation."
Because of the pressure the damaged discs are putting on his spinal cord, my dad has lost the majority of feeling in his right leg, in addition to the cut sciatic nerve to his left leg. The lack of sensation in his legs has made it difficult to balance and walk without pain. The pressure on his spine also causes numbness in his arms and hands making it difficult for him to hold tools or perform fine motor movements which are critical to his work. Because he has virtually no range of motion in his back, he has trouble even tying his shoes or getting out of bed. Despite dealing with this pain for the last two years, he still gets up and goes to work every day. And he still refuses to ask for help.
So instead, I am asking for help. My hero is hurting, and he needs our support. My dad desperately needs surgery to get him moving again. Specifically, he needs open spinal decompression with microdiscectomy and facetectomy. If he does not receive treatment, his condition will worsen to the point where he will no longer be able to walk without assistance, nor will he be able to continue working. Despite letters of recommendation from multiple doctors, the insurance company refuses to cover even a portion of the surgery cost. Please help me give my dad some relief from the pain and to give him his active, hardworking life back. For all he's given us through the years, please help me to give him the gift of a pain-free life again.
