UPDATE - NEW PROJECT BELOW

Hello everyone, I am Thomas and I am currently working as a teacher at Kayaba School with an incredible international team of young teachers composed by Ammar (Egypt), Andreas (Germany), Arenas (China), Laila (Egypt), Maggie (China), Nikhil (India), Quinn (USA) and myself (France/Switzerland). All teachers are undergraduate students studying eveything from medicine to engineering.

Kayaba School was founded in 2005 with the desire to provide quality and affordable education to slum children, many of whom could not afford to be in private or even government schools. Starting with only 5 students, we now have over 130 pupils at Kayaba. But today more than ever, Kayaba faces new and difficult challenges that we can overcome only with your help.

The school is situated within Mukuru slum, a large slum in south Nairobi. The structures that make up the school are - no different from the rest of the slum – made up of corrugated tin and wood, making for rather poor structures. Classrooms are small, cramped and are poorly lit due to no electricity supply and available space. Yet the enthusiastic students of Kayaba are present daily, for their love of learning.

We are well aware of similar projects existing in Kenya, if not worldwide; it is probably rude for us to ask for donations, but please hear us out because this time you are not going to give money to a random NGO, this time you can give a participation to improve the life of Bruno, Julia, Philip, Ivy, Christine and a lot of others children who wants to learn more each day.

Kayaba School was built on the foundation of good faith and heart; unfortunately it lacks from sufficient funds to develop properly and depends on donations. Our intention is to contribute in the uplifting of a school that desires to see the unfortunate children’s dreams realized.

In order to continue to ensure the sustainability of quality education we set three priorities:

1- Replacement of toilets (approx. 180€)

The toilets in the school are supplied by Sanergy, and are required to be inspected and replaced every two years, in accordance with hygiene standards and to prevent transmission of diseases endemic in slum areas. The toilets are used daily by over 150 people and it is imperative to maintain hygiene standards for the successful and safe operation of the school. Although, on the surface, the toilet fund may not appear as a long term solution, by continuing to replace the toilets we are preventing diseases which could permanently prevent students from attending school.

2- Setting up an emergency food program (770€)

Since the students are extremely motivated, their presence in the school is a result of the approval of their parents. In order to keep attendance rates at the school high enough, the incentive for students to attend school is the provision of a meal each day; as attendance is directly dependent on the provision of a meal.

This program, on its own is extremely expensive, and is usually funded by various associations and donations. However, this system no longer functions due to lack of funding. We are thus proposing to put in place a fund to support the provision of a meal each school day to counteract absenteeism and encourage high attendance and thus more will be educated. We have two different meals served through the week to ensure the correct caloric intake for the students:

- Meal 1 (23€/Meal ; 2 per week) : Rice and Greengrams
- Meal 2 (14€/Meal ; 3 per week) : Ugali and beans
- Salary of cook (36€ per month)

3- Opening a new classroom for 8th grade (300€)

Currently, Kayaba School has only classes (grades) 1 through 7, and 8th grade currently does not exist. As a consequence, the students cannot progress through to secondary school (grade 9 onwards). We are currently working towards renting a new room for class 8, allowing us to prepare the 22 students currently in class 7 graduate towards grade 8 and beyond. Renting the room will cost 25€ and the new room will allow us to properly prepare the students for secondary school.

I would like to thank you for sharing this post or making a donation for helping us with this wonderful adventure.

Asante sana... (Thank you ver much)

NEW PROJECT:

As you have already seen on the update above, your money has been used to achieve all the projects we planned (New toilets, Food programm and especially buying the class 8 instead of rent it because of the success of the fundraising).

Now we still have money left and we have the opportunity to buy class 7 as well if we can raise 400€ more. Each classroom is 80'000 Kenyan Shilling.

I know that it is unfair to ask for money again but it can really help this school in a sustainable way to improve their financial independence.
