Helping Katie Study In Finland

Donation protected
Who am I?
I'm a second year mental health nursing student, and I've been accepted to spend a semester in Finland in my third year, with 4 weeks working in a psychiatric hospital, and 9 weeks studying Finnish language, culture and healthcare.

Why crowdfunding?
The availability of a foreign placement is one of the reasons that I chose my course, so I've been planning and budgeting this for around 2 years. My original plan was to go to the Netherlands, which would have cost less to get to, had a climate more like the UK's, and very similar semester dates to my home university.

However, due to circumstances out of my control, I've ended up going to Finland instead, which means leaving a month earlier than anticipated, a need for warmer clothes, and spending all my savings (instead of just some) on getting there.

I will receive an Erasmus+ grant of €375 per month, but I only get 70% of this whilst I'm abroad. Additionally, despite taking the cheapest accommodation I was offered, I'll still have a shortfall. I will continue to receive my student loan/bursary, but this is reserved for essentials like food and public transport!

What will I spend the money on?
1) Paying my father back for the accommodation deposit that he's covered for me.
2) Warmer clothes!
3) Covering essential costs in the first few days before my Erasmus+ grant is paid.
4) Covering the shortfall between my necessary expenditure (rent/services) and the grant payment.

I will keep track of exactly how much I spend, and any surplus raised will be donated to Stockport Mind, my local branch of the national mental health charity, who I already volunteer with.

What else am I doing to raise funds?
1) I organised a small cakesale at my university.
2) I have worked weekends when there have been shifts available and will continue to do so before so leave, if possible)
3) I've sold some of my old DVDs, books, etc.
4) I've applied to a charitable organisation which sometimes issues small grants to nursing students (however, at 27, I'm too old for a lot of the grants available - most cut off at 25!)
