Library Needs New Microfilm Reader

Flora Public Library is located in Library Park at 216 North Main Street, in Flora, IL, and serves a population of 5,070. The library houses 45,773 books, 1400+ videos and DVDS, 1240+ audio books and music CDs, and 310+ microforms. Annual circuation for FY2014-2015 exceeded 47,000 items with annual library visits totaling over 43,000. Currently, the base budget for the library is $199,000. If projected budget cuts occur, that amount will be reduced by $40,000. This and three 10% budget cuts over the last five years have drastically impacted the purchase of new technology. The reduction in revenues will make it impossible for the library to purchase the piece of equipment from basic operating funds.
Flora Public Library is launching a fundraising campaign to purchase a new digital microfilm reader. The library’s two existing analog reader/printers are close to becoming obsolete. They will be replaced with one unit. The library’s current microfilm readers are used extensively by staff and patrons to look up genealogical, local history, and reference information.
The new digital device would allow patrons to view the microfilm, print copies on a laser printer or scan to a computer so a file can be saved or emailed. The library owns the local newspaper on microfilm back to 1912. It serves as the primary local history reference tool for patrons. Marriage and birth announcements are available as well as obituaries for the area. Many people look up an event that happened locally or research businesses or buildings that have been part of Flora’s past. These are just a few examples.
Make and model of the unit will be similar to the one pictured here. Target amount needed to purchase the unit is $12,000.00. The new digital microfilm reader would be networked with a computer and a laser printer to provide easy access for patrons. The machine is essential to continuing to fulfill the local history and genealogical needs of our patrons.
