Hello. I'd like to introduce you to our son Gabriel Kerr. He is of 26 weeks gestation and suffers from an extremely rare condition called ectopia cordis, whereby his heart has developed on the outside of his chest.
I went for a routine scan at 12 weeks and something immediately looked wrong. I had to go back the day after to see a consultant who confimed that his heart had developed on the outside of his chest. I was shocked with the news and didn't even entertain the idea that this could ever happen.
I went for numerous scans at London hosptials who confirmed the diagnosis of ectopia cordis. I was given the option to termiante the preganacy and was advised to terminate the pregnancy as he would not make it to 20 weeks. My husband and I decided to continue with the pregnancy and give our unborn baby a chance. We named him Gabriel which means 'miracle', as we believe that he is our little miracle.
We are regularly in London for scans and appointnments, and have a two night stay in January to meet the fetal team at the hospital. There are no plans for delivery yet, these will be decided on the 23rd January. My due date is the 17th April 2015, but I know that we will go in early for delivery.
Gabriel is a very special and unique baby who is going to require a lot of time and medical care. We want him to have the best chance possible when he is born and are committed to him totally. We are not prepared to give up on him and pray that the medical team will be able to operate on him after birth to save his life. I gave up work in November to concentrate on my pregnancy and give him the time and attention that he needs. We want the best possble outcome for our son and thank you for taking the time to digest our story.
All funds donated will go towards hospital visits for scans and appointments, all of which are in London. Funds will also be used for Gabriel's longer term care as he is going to require special eqipment and long term hospital care.
