I'm a 27 year-old personal trainer who has had some amazing experiences in life. I've been able to bike 4000 miles across the US to benefit Habitat for Humanity, and had the chance to work alongside families building their dreams with their bare hands.
For a long time I've wanted to "change the world" but didn't know how. I've come to realize that kindness is a seed that grows, and if we plant that seed, feed it and care for it, that kindness really can change the world.
About the project: I collect quotes, and I came upon a quote once which said "The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade we do not expect to sit." Essentially, it means we should do things for others without expectation of reward.
Johnny Appleseed was a nurseryman who introduced apple trees to much of the north east United States. He also liked to read stories to children, and cared deeply about animals and sustainable living. He wandered the country planting trees that he would never harvest, dropping seeds that would grow into more than just apples.
What I'd like to do is this: I'd like to find a nursery or a farm that will allow me to plant as many apple trees as I can afford to plant. I'd like to work with a school or youth group, and teach young people how to take care of the trees until they bear fruit. And when they bear fruit, I'd like to sell the apples to raise money for more trees, or to benefit a local food shelter.
Somewhere in the grove of trees, I'd like a plaque with that quote inscribed on it, and maybe a simple wooden bench, such that a person could one day sit in the shade of the trees that I planted.
It's a project that would continue to give for years, even decades after my fingerprints have disappeared from it, and one that just happens to be good for the environment, the animals, and sustainability. Like Johnny Appleseed would have wanted it.
