Each morning I wake up with a prayer of simple gratitude. Although I may be in need, there are others who need as well. My hope, to recover enough to be able to serve society again. ♥
Spent my Birthday weekend (feb 1) in the ER due to complication w brain injury...but hey, at least the doctors were cute ;)! I am so grateful to you all for your generosity and care- it lights up my heart. ♥♥♥♥
Huge gratitude today for those who have shared, donated, and sent kind words and wishes! You are all heroes and angels. Thank you so very much!!!!
The longest journey begins with a single step....This girl is not giving up! :)
Dr. Joanna Leigh has dedicated her entire life to serving others. She worked, paid her own way through her BA, MA, and PhD, and founded an international charity. Joanna never took from society, she gave. Today, she has a DOJ Victim ID number, a FBI contact, and both a One Fund and Victims Assistance number.
At the Boston Marathon, Dr. Joanna Leigh was cheering the runners and saw the first explosion. She ran to assist the wounded, unknowingly running directly into the second bomb. She was hit at a about 10-20ft range, thrown back and blacked out. Upon awakening, she still managed to help a wounded old man to safety. She didn't realize how badly she was injured and doesn't remember much of how she got home. Texts from that day and people's emails have helped recreate a few moments. Numerous specialists, scans, and tests have repeatedly confirmed her tragic diagnosis:
1) traumatic brain injury (confirmed by two neurologists, brain scans, and cognitive testing in which Joanna is in the lowest percentile);
2) Over 50% bilateral hearing loss (permanent, non correctable nerve not just ear drum)
3) neuro-blindness (significant vision loss, brain based nerves/ vessels are damaged)
This lady is a trooper- she isn't giving up on life- or her mission to serve others! Brain injury costs over 5 million in expenses over a lifetime, even with insurance. Joanna requires a home health aid, home modifications, housing assistance, a polytrauma trained service dog, proper nutrition, polytrauma rehabilitation services, training for hearing aids, funds for replacement batteries weekly, medication costs, transportation to her daily medical appointments, visual aids to help her communicate, funds for ongoing PTSD therapy, an organizational aid, speech therapist, etc.
This fundraiser is URGENT: Joanna has run out of savings and we are helping her start this fundraiser to survive and recover. She lives on $473/month SSI. The One Fund has NOT helped Joanna.
Ken Feinberg of the One Fund, which gave her only $8,000 told Joanna she "looked fine" and "a nice vacation would fix her". Maybe he shouldn't have refused to read her medical reports, right? ;) The new One Fund president has stated on NECN that he will not help Joanna because Traumatic Brain Injury is "controversial" and "many doctors believe it doesn't even exist". Really??? On which planet? Are these doctors of MEDICINE, or maybe something else, like snorkeling?
The Victims Assistance office, Stacey Corin, confirmed she should get used to eating ketchup as a meal and living in a shelter/unsafe public housing because "that's what people of little means had always done". "Harsh reality", she said. Harsh? Gosh, no, super helpful, thanks ;)!
Joanna has an unbreakable heart and spirit--we hope you will PLEASE reach into your heart for this hero and help by donating and sharing this on FB/twitter. Thank you so much!
