UPDATE (06-06-12) - Note from Pat Gates regarding funeral services:

Danny's memorial service in Florida will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning, June 9th, at Trilacoochee church of Christ building located at 20300 US Highway 301, Dade City, FL . Following the service there will be a covered dish get together at the Meltons 34226 Harris Hill Road, Dade City, FL 33523. In lieu of flowers I will be posting information on how to make donations for the spreading of the gospel in Prague. Danny cared a great deal for the spread of the gospel in eastern Europe and was making future plans to help in the work there.

I will post information about the memorial service in Atlanta whenever we figure out the time.

UPDATE (06-05-12): Regrettably, Danny passed away at 7:37am this morning at Shands Hosiptal in Gainesville, FL. I count it an honor and blessing to have called Danny my friend. May God's blessing and comfort be with his family.
Since this site has been out of order for the last month you may not have had opportunity to help the family. If you have desire to help or other concerns please contact me directly at the email address below.
Thank you,

This fund raiser has been organized by several close friends

Of Daniel Gates who love him like a brother and believe that your

generosity can give him hope for the future and peace in the present.

Please understand that this fund will not specifically pay for the operation but for previous and ongoing daily living expenses.

We have made a significant step helping Daniel and his family in a big way. God truly has proven how he is able to do "exceedingly, abundantly beyond all that we can ask or think" (Eph 3:20)!  Knowing that He is more than able, we will press on!

Thank you again for all your love for Daniel and his family!

A Note From the Attending Cardiologist:

Normal hearts have 2 pumping chambers also known as ventricles, the one on the right pumps blood to the lungs where it picks up oxygen, and the one on the left that pumps blood rich in oxygen to the rest of the body.
Daniel has a form of congenital heart disease where the right side of the heart is too small to effectively pump blood to the lungs. He has therefore had numerous surgeries to create a way for the blood to get to the lungs by passive flow, bypassing the right side of the heart.
Unfortunately, even though those surgeries worked well enough to keep him alive for the last 30 years, for a good while now Daniel has been getting progressively sicker as his heart function continues to deteriorate.
Daniel has been my patient for the last 6 months, and has had to be in the hospital all the time as he needs a combination of different intravenous medications to strengthen heart function, so we can keep him going until a heart becomes available.
This is really a critical window of opportunity for Daniel, as this is his one and only chance to make a meaningful recovery, but he is still in the middle of a tough fight against time, as he needs to get a heart before the rest of his organs give up and also deteriorate beyond our ability to get them back.
It has been both an honor and a privilege for me to help Daniel as he defies all odds to fight for something that is taken for granted for so many others, and I feel no effort is in vain if it helps him get there.

Biography:

Daniel Gates is a 33 year old man who has lived his whole life with extremely rare heart defects that have prevented him from living a normal healthy lifestyle. He has had multiple surgeries all which failed, but gave him a few years before another procedure was necessary. Even though his hospitalizations threatened to derail his ambitions, he set goals for himself, attending Temple University, going abroad to learn art history and studio art in Rome, Italy. He was even hospitalized in Rome for a short period of time, but was soon back on those ancient roads. At this early age Daniel landed art exhibitions in Rome and even had a piece show in Berlin. By 23, Daniel had shown in Rome, Berlin, New York, Philadelphia, Tampa, and Florida State.  All of this required great determination because he was frequently sick and due to a weak heart, spent long periods of time in the hospital.

Daniel now is so sick he has been hospitalized for the past 6 months. His defects are so rare that it will most likely take a long period of time before a heart that will not be rejected can be found.  Still, he has been placed at the "top of the list", so there is hope and reason for him to persevere.

As far as his trust in an almighty God, Daniel lives by God's Word and believes that all things are possible to him who believes (Mk 9:23).  His deep faith in the resurrected Christ drives him forward and gives him the understanding that he is in the palm of God's hand.

At this point, Daniel can only wait for a heart to be found, and while he waits, the financial burden grows.  Funds collected by this site will be used primarily to pay for family expenses due to Daniel's care, both past, present and future.  These include expenses for housing, transportation, and Daniel's specialized diet among many others.

Jesus taught us that it is "better to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35).  Please reach deep into your heart to help this dear young man who has done so much good in his short life.  May God bless you as you serve Him!
