JEFFERSON CITY - A family of 10 and their neighbor were safely displaced after their house on 1405 West Main Street in Jefferson City caught fire Thursday afternoon. The Jefferson City Fire Department responded to calls around 3 p.m. from neighbors, who said they heard an explosion in the basement of the two-story building. Fire crews said neighbors also reported seeing a man running from the back of the house. Firefighters extinguished the blaze in 30 minutes. Crews said the basement was severely damaged, with some flames reaching the first floor and smoke reaching the upper floor. Jefferson City Fire Department Division Chief Jason Turner said there were no injuries. "The building was occupied, but the residents at the time of the fire weren't here," Turner said. There were eight children and three adults living in the building. Resident of the home and mother to the eight children, Malonasia Cobbins, said however, her kids were inside when neighbors heard the what they described as an explosion-like noise. Cobbins said her neighbor then rushed to get the children out. "I am just thankful that my kids are OK," Cobbins said. "I don't know what's going to happen. I've lost everything." Turner said the Red Cross will provide assistance to the displaced family. Fire crews at the scene said they found some ammunition in the basement. They said that could have caused the noise the neighbors reported. No fire arms were found. The Jefferson City Police Department is investigating the potential suspect.
