Vandalized Home, Let's Help

Donation protected
NOTE: Funds have been raised and the $1000 goal met! Below is the original campaign description.

What a terrible way to start the new year.

Maybe if we all chip in a little, the cost to repair her vandalized home won't be such a burdon to this grandmother.

No longer will I sit back and do nothing.  Whatever funds are raised, I will transfer to Ms. Turner, pending her approval  (note:  GoFundMe will take 7.9% +.30$ per donation) PLEASE see the EDIT below.

Here is the story I saw on WHNT News 19 today.

LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. – Terry Turner was ringing in the new year with her granddaughter Wednesday evening when a crash at the front of her home startled her.

She was in the back bedroom of her home when three windows in the front of the house were broken by heavy rocks. Frantic, she dialed 911 and slipped out the bedroom window with her granddaughter into her back yard, fearing that people were in her home.

When Limestone County Sheriff’s deputies arrived, they found the scene pictured above. They discovered that rocks had been thrown through three windows and a racial slur had been spray-painted on her home.

Terry told us Thursday that she has lived at the residence for eight years. She said she has experienced people driving by and yelling the slur at her when she was in her yard, but she never thought that the racism would be escalated to this level.

Despite the display of racism and hatred, and the vandalism and destruction caused to her home, Terry said she holds no malice in her own heart.

“I don’t hate whoever did this. I just don’t understand it,” she said.

“Racism is something that’s taught. When you get two babies in a room, a black baby and a white baby in a room, they don’t know nothing about that until they’re taught,” Terry added.

No arrests have been made. If you have any information about this crime, please contact the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office at 256-232-0111.

EDIT:  This is the Thank You note I will be sending via email to donors:
Thanks Donor!

After reading the news story, I figured $1000 would help defer the cost of the 3 broken windows, and the garage door.

However, I don't even know Ms. Turner.   She may not even want these funds for her repairs...but, I just felt it was something we, as a community, could do.

I'll find her through the sheriff’s office and see if she can use the funding.

I cannot guarantee that Ms. Turner will even accept this funding or use it for the repairs.  I'm not going to burden myself or you with that.  When something bad happens to a fellow citizen, the right thing to do is reach out and help, and that is what we have done.

If for some reason Ms. Turner does not want to accept the donations, I will hold the funds until a similar need or situation arises.

 Thank you again.  Hilary
