Bring Jax and Kai Back Together

Donation protected
We're Jax and Kai, a long distance couple from South Australia and Michigan, respectively. We've been together for over a year, and we've been best friends for much longer than that. We are both social justice-oriented college students, paying our own way through university. Kai is a PR and Gender Studies student, and Jax is in between majors, but working hard to figure out how to bring his dreams to life. After graduation, we both hope to work in the nonprofit sector and improve the lives of marginalized people. We also plan to close the 10,000 mile/16,000 kilometer geographic distance between us.

In the past year, we've managed to split a $2,000 plane ticket to visit each other once every six months - a pretty amazing feat, on the tight budget of two college students. The last time we saw one another was in December of 2013. Ideally, we would be planning another visit for May or June - but because of college tuition, living expenses, lack of parental support and transition* expenses, we cannot do it on our own this time. Jax, who is taking a short hiatus from uni to focus on his mental health and transition*, has applied for over 100 jobs but has not gotten far with any. Kai is grappling with a loss to his expected financial aid package that will impact his ability to pay tuition.

That's why we need your help.

Honestly, both Jax and Kai have reservations about asking people for donations. We both value independence, resourcefulness and self-sufficiency, and if GoFundMe wasn't our last resort, you wouldn't be reading this right now. That being said, there is nothing we wouldn't do to be able to be together. We value the relationship that we have, no matter how far apart we are, but we can all probably agree that nothing quite compares to spending time together with the people we love.

Thank you for taking the time to read our story. If you have the means to contribute to our ticket fund, we appreciate every cent. If you don't, thank you anyway, and please pass our story and this page on to your family and friends.

Sincerely,
Kai and Jax

*Jax and Kai both identify as trans. If you don't know what that means, it's okay - check out the definitions below. For practical purposes, all you really need to know is that Jax responds to he/him/his pronouns (i.e. "He is the coolest person in the universe."), and Kai responds to he/him/his or they/them/their pronouns (i.e. "He plays the guitar," or "They are really nice.").

Transgender (trans) definition: trans is a term that describes a person whose gender identity differs from the sex/gender they were designated at birth.

Pronoun definition: pronouns are parts of speech we use to refer to people; in English, pronouns are gendered.
