I visited one of the people who were courageous enough to tell their personal story of being kicked off of Maine Care. Peter is in his early 30's and has blood clots and asthma (both genetic). He can only work part time (due to the clots) and was kicked off of Maine Care a year ago (for no reason besides his youth).
When I visited him today he told me he was 'doing the best he could' but had no inhalers and no meds and altho the hospital had called him to get tested he couldn't afford to go in. Every day is another day on the edge. I worry every time I call him as he maight be in the hospital. If he lands there it will cost the public more than a year of tests and meds.
When I visited him a year ago he had a huge bowl of inhalers on top of his TV. I asked him about it and he said they were all empty but when he was desperate he would go thru them and sometimes get a puff. Each inhaler (without insurance) costs around $40.
