Nu Community Seeks Your Support!

Since the opening of Nu Community Development Center, September 2013, people often ask my wife and I, “what do you do here?”  It’s a fair question.  What do we do?  The most obvious answer is on the sign hanging from our building, but it is deeper than that.  I have been to and worked for community centers over the past several years, often wondering myself, what do centers really do and how do they impact the surrounding communities they serve?  Well, to keep it simple, Nu Community Development Center is a privately Black owned institution established to preserve the benevolent tradition of our forebears, promote healthy lifestyles (mental, spiritual, and physical) and to protect the common interest of our community.  More importantly, our focus is geared toward the development of our youth through academic enrichment and social development.  Within this year, we have had the opportunity to host thought-provoking lectures, informative workshops and operate a successful year-round academic enrichment camp for elementary and middle school students.

In the upcoming year, we want to do more!  The only way to do this is with your help to keep our doors open!  Due to the center being privately owned, unlike most community centers, we do not receive federal funds to maintain activities and operations.  Starting the business was the easy part, but the challenge has been maintaining it financially as well as meeting the demands of the community.  We have several projects underway that require funding.  Some of those projects are basic needs for the center and expansion of our programs that will further serve our mission.

It is truly a blessing to get up each day, knowing you are serving a great cause.  Often challenging yet humbling, we accept what comes with the territory, just as others must accept that there is no real security in any undertaking.  What my wife and I have both learned, is that the people make the experience at the center and we have been blessed to provide a space where community is being developed.  During this Kwanzaa season, we are asking that you help promote the fourth principle which is Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics) by donating to the center.  Any amount helps!  We thank you in advance.
