Eelyn was born to Amber and Jesse five weeks early on September 27, 2014. She was diagnosed after birth with paralyzed vocal chords and later with a narrowing of her windpipe, called a "complete tracheal ring". ,both of which compromise her ability to breathe. She was first incubated, and then after spending a week in the NICU in Green Bay, WI. was transferred to the Children's Hospital in Milwaukee.
Eelyn has undergone several surgeries in her short life. At only a few weeks old, she had a slide tracheoplasty, a tracheotomy, and the placement of a g-tube. All necessary to help her breathe and eat.
After spending nearly three months in the NICU, Amber and Jesse are finally able to bring her home, but this will not be the end of her medical journey. Eelyn will need 24 hour care for 1-3 years, at which time if her vocal chords have not begun working, they will consider further surgical options.
As you can imagine, medical expenses are growing.
Amber has 12 more weeks off work unpaid, at which time the family will need to make decisions whether or not she is able to return to work, or stay at home caring for their 3 year old and baby Eelyn. These are difficult decisions to make.
