           Mission Detroit: Lazarus Come Forth!
                            June 15th - 22nd 2015

We are a group of experienced evangelists taking God's Good News to one of the most dangerous areas of Detroit Michigan, Cass Corridor.

The primary purpose of the mission is lead people into the joy of the Lord. We plan to see God bring beauty from the ashes of these people's lives, but we have other projects as well.

We are taking colorful signs with Bible verses and encouraging messages  from the children of Middle Tennessee to the children of Detroit. There are an estimated 5,000 homeless children in Detroit. We want them to know that they are not forgotten, that America still cares about them.

We are planting trees in a community park created by Peacemakers Internationala Christian outreach that has been serving East Detroit for 20 years. This will offer respite for people who walk everywhere but have no place to sit other than blocks spilling out from falling buildings. It will also offer an opportunity to minister to the community right outside the doors of the church.

We will also be serving The Michigan Urban Farming Initiative  by providing fruit trees. MUFI is a group of farms built on empty lots that provide fresh organic fruits and vegetables in a "food desert", a community where the nearest grocery store is a one hour walk. People in food deserts like the community MUFI serves get 92% of their food from convenient stores. MUFI is providing a nutritious and tasty alternative to chips and soda.

We are assisting in community outreaches, hosting street parties and providing nightly outdoor Christian movies to the people of East Detroit. On at least one night we will host an outdoor showing of "More Than Dreams"  in Dearborn Michigan, a Muslim city in America. It is a series of true stories of how Muslims are coming to Jesus through prophetic dreams. We will be asking for prayer support that night because this will be seen by some as an outright attack on an enemy stronghold.

Lastly, we will offer an outdoor worship festival for the suburban youth of Detroit. We are calling it First Friday because it will be held on the first Friday of their summer vacation. Several pastors will offer inspiring messages, at least three Nashville worship bands will be offering praise to the Lord, we will have abuse counselors available, local charities and mission efforts will have information booths to encourage the youth to set summer service and spiritual goals. Even the best efforts will be to no avail if there is no aggressive follow up. We wish to be more than conquerors we wish to be administrators. We want to leave Detroit on June 22nd with inspired youth who will continue the work in our absence.

Money collected will be used for travel and planning. It is needed to make deposits, to market the events, to purchase material for signs, and to feed and house the workers. It will also be used to pay for the transport of plants to Detroit. No harvest worker is being charged to participate. They are not required to raise funds. No bake sales or candy sales or yard sales. We have promised that if they are willing to go to the gates of hell and challenge the devil to a fight, we will find people who will be honored to participate by helping to pay for it. Just last week we received a plant donation for the park of $30,000 worth of trees.

Some say, "David, you can die doing those things" I say, "I fully expect to die doing these things, but let it be glory to the Lord. There is actually no safer place than exactly where the Lord has called you to be"

Here are some of our committed volunteers.

David Haley

David Haley grew up working on his family tree farm. Farming is in his blood. Farming is all about getting rid of the bad stuff, nurturing the good stuff and helping little weak things grow big and strong. It makes perfect sense that he surrendered his life to the Lord after a well done sermon on the parable of the Sower given by pastor Kenny Skinner.

Since that time David has been a student of Pastors Fred and Karen Johnson. "I have always been certain that God had fought the battle and defeated the enemy so I was very comfortable celebrating that victory until I went to Detroit" David's heart was broken on a scouting mission to Detroit. It was in Detroit that he saw the battle for souls up close.

David works for Christian Broadcasting Network supervising and assisting the prayer partners at the 700 Club Nashville prayer center. He has prayed with over 20,000 people and has stood before the Lord with over 3,000 salvations or rededications. He is organizing and co-sponsoring Mission Detroit: Lazarus Come Forth!

Emil Justian

Juvenile Justice Ministry

Emil's life "before Christ" was in Detroit and Boston music scene. After his sons were grown, Emil left his musical professional career as a writer and recording artist and ironically, moved to Nashville Tennessee. After the birth of his daughter, Emily Jo, he accepted Christ and married his best friend, Jo. In 2002 he became the first white minister to be ordained in the Big Harpeth United Primitive Baptist Association. He and Jo then began a home church, Triple Cross. Emil's love for Christ, children and the biblically uneducated has drawn a myriad of people into their home.

Melanie Oldham

Campus Life Coordinator

Melanie joined the Youth for Christ family in February of 2014. She has a heart for ministering and developing the minds of youth. She is heavily involved in youth activities in the community such as teaching, leading youth and Sunday school classes at Greater Grace Temple Community church.  She is also involved in Bible study, praying with students, street ministry, and prison ministry. She has a strong desire for every student to know Jesus Christ!

Ron Shepherd

Ron joined Youth for Christ in April of 2011 as a member on the Board of Director team. In June he accepted the role of Executive Director for the organization. He is a full time volunteer with us and he has a passion to see people of all ages become disciples of Jesus Christ. Prior to joining Y.F.C. he served as a Executive with McDonald's Corporation for 35 years. He served in many different positions throughout his career. He was involved in Operations, Training and Development, Human Resources, and Real Estate roles.

He became a "born again" Christian in 1993 and immediately sensed that God was calling him to do international mission work. He and his family lived and served in the former Soviet Union for a year, Toronto, Canada for a year and half and he's done a number of short term mission trips to places like Africa and Iraq. He has been married to his High School sweetheart for 32 years and has three children that all reside in the Nashville area.
