About the Project

Hope in Focus is a program that teaches photography and art concepts to children with chronic conditions as a way for them to deal with their diagnosis in a positive way. The original project was part of The Phillips Scholarship Program and took place at St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital in Duluth, MN in the summer of 2016.

Hope in Focus is going to take place this summer in Bismarck, ND! I am ecstatic about this new adventure with the project and cannot wait to implement it here in my hometown and meet a new group of kiddos.

I am in the process of reserving a classroom at the Heritage Center in Bismarck, ND and will be able to reserve it officially once funding is secured. Having both the classroom space as well as many spots to adventure outdoors to take photos will make this a wonderful location!

The project will be held Saturday August 4, 2018 and Saturday August 11, 2018 from 1pm - 4pm. Each session will have a photography related learning objective and corresponding mental health lesson. Students will learn about prominent historical and contemporary photographers as well as basic photography concepts. Each day the participants will have time to journal down their thoughts, take photos to practice their new skills, and do art projects at their own pace that relate to the days lesson. And of course, we eat some tasty snacks.  The goal is to have fun and feel more confident along the way!

Participant's health levels are considered each day during the project, with the lesson plans and activities being adjusted accordingly to fit the needs of each individual.  Whether you have been diagnosed with cancer, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, asthma, depression, etc., you are welcome. The project is open to those ages 8 to 18 that have chronic conditions, as well as friends and siblings.

Each participant will have access to a Canon DSLR camera and will receive a USB drive to store all of their photos on.  Additionally, local filmmaker extraordinare Samuel Sprynczynatyk will be filming the project and capturing the special moments throughout.

This project is extremely close to my heart as I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis (CF), a chronic genetic condition affecting the lungs and pancreas, in 2013. Art became a way for me to deal with my own diagnosis and process all of the emotions that were flooding my mind throughout the journey. If not for this diagnosis, I never would have been inspired to start Hope in Focus, and for that I am so grateful.

If you are able to help in any way it would be so appreciated! My forever rule is that the program will not cost anything to participants, so all costs will be covered via fundraising.
