Henry's Heroes

As many of you know, Henry is headed to chemo camp again. His testicular cancer has returned. It's stage 3 in his left lung. This time he will need a bone marrow transplant and high-dose chemotherapy. As scary as that sounds, the good news is that Lance Armstrong's doctor says he can cure him. The bad news is the treatment is expensive and the cancer center is in Indianapolis. This means Henry and Melanie are going to have to travel back and forth during his transplant.

We are starting a GoFundMe campaign, Henry's Heroes, to help with medical and travel expenses for the family. Henry faces at least 7 weeks of being in the hospital at Kansas and Indiana University Medical centers. After the 7 week hospital stay, there will be a period of recovery that is individual to each patient. (If you know Henry that means he will try to get out of bed the first day and go for a "quick" run.)

Since Henry is a self-employed insurance broker, and has no choice but to work during his treatment, it would be a large burden off of his shoulders if he could concentrate on his treatment and recovery. After three years of complicated testing, surgery, radiation and chemotherapy treatments, the family's emergency fund is low.

Henry first conquered cancer over 20 years ago when he was diagnosed with stage 1 testicular cancer. At that point, the surgery was curative. He went on to build a happy life and was blessed to have a son, Zacary, who is twelve.

When he was diagnosed with a new primary tumor on the other side in 2012, he continued to believe he would live a life free of cancer. He has never let his spirit be defeated, even when he has been physically depleted and received upsetting news.

It's a simple wish that keeps Henry motivated--to see Zacary as an adult. To witness and enjoy the full expression of the person Zacary will become. And like most of us, he will certainly enjoy seeing what Zac decides to do with that curly hair after he grows up ???!!!

Henry is beyond thankful for his family and friends. He is humbled by the selfless support and love he has been given from friends close and far. All of your prayers and well wishes combine to give Henry the courage to move forward into the power of possibility. The possibility of a cure!
