As many of you know, I have been living with a chronic spine injury since early 2007. As stubborn as I am, I have been in a cycle of reinjury and rehabilitation since surgery in late 2007.
Recently my condition has gotten worse and I can no longer do simple tasks without angering the nerves that regulate my legs. It has been an extremely humbling couple of years. I can not bend over at the waist, lift anything, stand for more than 30 minuets or even walk around the block more than once without extreme pain.(Swallowed a lot of pride to type all of that out.) My condition is chronic, and not likely to improve, so I need to find ways to make my day to day life more purposeful and enjoyable. I hope to acquire, train and love a Labradoodle pup in the next year.
I hope to work with Discovery Dogs in Roseville where they will evaluate my lil' lady for suitability as an assistance dog. Ideal training age for the dog is between 1-3 years. So I will have to prep her for the first year. Each client plans the course of training with an instructor. Individual instruction fee is $60 per lesson. Most clients meet with an instructor at least twice each month and complete training within two years.
So, the long and short of this is that it is pretty pricey. The cost for a service dog includes training, veterinary costs, boarding and acquisition of the dog. It typically ranges from $3,500. to $15,000 depending on the skills that are required for each recipient. I will require moderate skills such as object retrieval, stabilization, carrying and clothing removal.
I hope to raise enough money to take the monetary sting out of the process and just enjoy the new companionship and mobility that comes with owning a service dog. Anything is appreciated, and I will be sure to update everyone about the process as I get things rolling.
