Help Dad after life-altering wreck

Steve's Story

Many of you may already know that our Dad suffered a horrific accident on May 17th which resulted in a multitude of fractures, a concussion, and most critically, the loss of his right leg above the knee. Thankfully he has been cared for by a spectacular team of doctors and surrounded by loving family members and friends and he is alive and strong. He is still in the ICU and it is unclear when he’ll be well enough to leave, but we know that the road to full recovery and his return to independence is a long way off.

What you may not know is that about eight months ago his home of fifteen years caught fire while he was away at work, and by the time he arrived it was a total loss. Dad lost all the work he'd personally put into the home.  He moved in with his daughter, Sadie, and her family.  Eventually, thanks to his sister, our Aunt Cheri, Dad got the news that an old family home -- where his grandparents had lived -- had been vacated and that he  would soon be able to move back to his hometown. But the home , built in 1901, would require a major rehab before it would be liveable. Dad decided he would do all the work himself and got right to work with the plans. He intended to make this house his home to live in until and through his retirement.

Before his accident, Dad made some great progress on the house, including finishing an upstairs bathroom and installing doors and locks, but there’s still tons to be done--it needs electricity, windows, and has no kitchen (other than a microwave). He needs the interior framed for drywall, the floors installed, roofwork done, paint, furniture – the list goes on. We would like to finish it for him by the time he has fully recovered, now that he will not be able to finish it himself as he intended. And we’d like to add a downstairs bathroom, an entry ramp, a stairlift, and other features around the home that will make it easier for Dad to transition back to a normal, independent life.

Dad has always been an incredibly hard worker and he has always made it his first priority to take care of everyone around him. He spent most of his life lovingly raising his five children--and later taking in our grandparents when they were no longer able to live on their own.  He's spent countless hours helping his friends and family with their own projects whenever they need it. We think it's time we helped Dad out, when he needs it most.

His daughter, Mollie, was able to catch a tender moment of realization when Dad said, 'Everyone cares so much!' with obvious tears in his eyes.  He's touched by every offer of support and simple gesture of kindness. He’s had a huge outpouring of support—who knew we had so many contractor friends!!—but we still are falling way short on the costs of fastracking the home rebuild—estimates are up to $50k. Many of you have asked if there's anything you can do. We think this might be where your generous offers would be most helpful. We are extremely grateful. Anything you can contribute to our campaign to get this house finished is very much appreciated. Please help us get Dad into his new home and living independently as soon as possible upon his recovery.

Thank you so very much!!
