Post Surgery Medical Costs
Madeleine Murray is a little 10 year old girl from Victoria, British Columbia. She has a very rare form of arthrogryposis that presents in her core, neck and limbs. Her condition is precarious due to two recent and unsuccessful surgery attempts, to manage a curvature of her spine known as kyphosis and scoliosis. Because of these surgeries Madeleine's neck collapsed and her chin was fixed down to her chest, limiting her vision and making it difficult to look up and forward. Choking was a serious and life threatening concern. The longer they waited to correct her spine the greater the chance that the surgery would become more complicated and her condition could become permanent.
Madeleine's parents took her to a world-renowned deformity specialist in Florida, Dr. Feldman at the Paley Institute. On October 14, 2016 she had the first of two required corrective surgeries and has started four months of extensive rehabilitation, counselling and therapy to regain her strength and help her cope with the traumas of the past year. The second surgery was undertaken on November 14th 2016, and despite some immediate complications Madeleine has been making excellent progress St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida.
The surgeries and extensive pre-and post-op care have not been funded by the public health system in Canada. This has placed an exceptional financial burden on Madeleine’s family to try and cover the costs. The initial surgeries were made possible through fundraising and a very large loan from a family friend.
Madeleine will hopefully be returning home to Canada in March 2017, provided her rehabilitation continues as a good pace. As well as trying to repay the loan from the friend, her family also need to find funds to pay for ongoing and future medical care and expenses, including flights back to Florida for check-ups.
The current minimum estimate of current and future costs to the family is $250,000. They need your urgent help!
