At Arbol International, we believe that the solution to poverty in the Amazon must be centered on caring for some of the region’s most beautiful treasures: the trees. (That is why we are named Arbol—it means tree in Spanish.)
We started out to improve the living conditions of the people in the Amazon through education and microbusinesses leading to self-sustainability. During the last 10 years, our team of professionals and local natives has developed microbusinesses focused on fighting malnourishment through poultry farming and horticulture. Opportunities like these enable Amazonians to rise above poverty while improving their diet and health.
But there is a roadblock that can’t be moved through education and self-sustainability alone.
In the last 40 years, 25% of the Amazon rainforest has been lost to deforestation. The illegal lumber trade, cocaine, agro-industrial farming, and increased global demand for timber products and land are all quickly depleting one of the world’s greatest treasures. Animal and plant species are disappearing, affecting the local food supply. Droughts are becoming more frequent and severe.
Deforestation isn’t just affecting the Amazon itself. This massive rainforest is key to protecting our world from the effects of climate change. Not only does the Amazon breathe in a quarter of all the carbon soaked up by the world’s forests each year, but the trees cool the earth by conducting heat from the ground high into the atmosphere. And the water the trees release through transpiration turns into rain and snow as far away as the United States and the southern part of South America!
If we continue on our current path of consumption without reforesting the Amazon, it will be gone in less than 100 years. Yet selfishness, materialism, and the short-term vision of business interests are making it clear that there is no intention to reforest what has been depleted.
At Arbol International, we believe we have a solution that will help the Amazonians and the rest of the world. But we need your support to make it happen!
Arbol’s international team of professionals has identified a species of tree that matures in only five years. Our plan is to purchase 30 acres of deforested land which will be reforested and responsibly harvested, creating a permanent forest area and income. This will in turn allow us to educate the community and replicate this self-sustainable model in other deforested areas of the Amazon.
