Help students see Hidden Figures!
Students from Lipman and Visitacion Valley middle schools have been invited to attend a free screening of the movie Hidden Figures. After the movie, the students will have a chance to converse with modern "hidden figures" including current NASA engineer Gilena Monroe and neuroscience PhD candidates at Stanford and Berkeley. While both Lipman and VVMS are located in the outskirts of San Francisco, the schools are fairly isolated and we need your help with paying for buses to get the students to the movie theater in Daly City.
Many of the students invited are in low-income families and/or are surrounded by gang violence. This is an exceptional opportunity for them to watch a movie that will inspire them to overcome challenges to achieve their dreams. Moreover, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet scientists who have all overcome barriers in their journey, including someone who grew up in their same community!
The free screening was made possible by a generous gift from PepsiCo when I won a runner-up award in the Search for Hidden Figures Scholarship. They even expanded the gift to allow students from both Lipman and VVMS to attend. I grew up attending the Real Options for City Kids program in Visitacion Valley and graduated middle school from Lipman. I never would have imagined myself working towards a PhD in neuroscience at Berkeley. I hope by organizing this event, I can convince students that they are worthy and capable of achieving their greatest hopes and dreams. Your help will make this event possible and spark some of our future engineers, doctors, scientists, and astronauts!
