A New Playground for Harlem Park!

Imagine an elementary school without a safe playground, entire school days without fresh air, or educating elementary-aged children for 7 hours who do not get a regular recess. That is our reality at Harlem Park Elementary Middle School, serving nearly 400 students ranging from Pre-kindergarten to 8th grade.  We are a Title 1, high-need school located in the West Baltimore City neighborhood of Harlem Park / Sandtown-Winchester.  Many of our classrooms and common-areas lack air-conditioning or reliable heat and we cannot use the school water for cooking or drinking because of lead pipes.  Our facility needs a boost in order to match the enduring optimism, energy, and dedication to education of our students, parents, and staff; we believe that a new playground will provide that morale boost!

Our children need a space that will support their potential to thrive and learn.  Our students must have opportunities for play that builds imagination, teamwork, creativity, and independence. It is well-documented that play not only promotes physical activity, reducing obesity and related health problems, but also improves cognitive functioning and academic performance significantly. High-quality recess programs help students feel more engaged, safer, and positive about the school day, and improve school attendance. With a safe and secure playground, we can bring daily recess and kinesthetic learning to the deserving students of Harlem Park Elementary Middle School.

We are on our way, but we need your help!

Harlem Park Elementary Middle School applied for and received a grant from KaBOOM! for a playground. The CarMax Foundation has provided the majority of the funding for the playground project through its national partnership with KaBOOM!, supporting The Foundation’s commitment to furthering the cause of children’s healthy living, and approximately 150 CarMax associates will volunteer their time on build day. We NEED YOU to help us raise our community contribution of $8500 toward the cost of the play equipment and infrastructure like landscaping, painting, and seating to compliment the beautiful new playground.  In addition, we need funds to support the project in the form of additional safety provisions, logistical necessities for our volunteers on and leading up to build-day, food for volunteers and other incidentals to make the playground that The CarMax Foundation and KaBOOM! are providing to our high-need school a reality.  Our goal is a total of $10,000.

Be a part of the restoration of productive play, joy, and achievement to Harlem Park Elementary-Middle School, our larger West-Baltimore school-community, and ultimately the whole of Baltimore City.
