My story begins when I was 12 and I was diagnosed with idiopathic adolscent scoliosis. My doctor watched my curve for a while to see if it would change in the coming years. Unfortunately, it did digress to 45 degrees and I was put into a boston brace when I was 14 and had to wear that brace for 23 hours a day. I was only free from it for an hour a day. I ended up having to wear that brace until I was 17 and it brought my curve down to twenty degrees. My doctor then took me out of the brace and told me I wouldn't need any more treatment as my curve shouldn't progress anymore.
However, now as I have just graduated from college, I have found out that my scoliosis has come back. It has now developed into adult idiopathic scoliosis and I curently have a fifty degree curve in my thoracic and lumbar vertebrae and a forty degree curve in my cervical vertebrae and a degenerative disc in my lumbar vertebrae. My doctor has told me it can push into my heart and lungs and if it dosen't get fixed I could eventually need a heart or lung transplant. So I had made the conscious decision to have the surgery in order to have a better quality of life and not be in so much pain when I walk.
For the surgery, the doctor is going to put two titanium rods in my back to straighten my back out and to align my whole body back into place where it should be. My surgery is scheduled for November 17, 2014.
I just recently found out that my surgery costs $200,000 and my health insurance will cover all but $40,000. I just wanted to reach out to anyone that would be willing to help a little bit so my parents don't have such a heavy burden to carry since they are already paying for me and my three sisters to go to college. So if anyone could please help me raise some money for my surgery, I woud greatly appreciate it and absolutely any amount will be helpful.
