Imagine your beautiful seventeen-year-old daughter having a transplant. Imagine seeing her body deteriorate into a fragile shell of it’s former self, almost unrecognizable. Imagine, day after day, watching poison be pumped into her veins and hoping it helps. Imagine watching the sparkle fade from her eyes and missing her sweet laugh and tender smile. Imagine the uncertainty in not knowing if your daughter will survive. Imagine holding her hand as she screams in pain night after night-and you can’t do anything about it.
That has been the Patton family’s reality for the past six months as their precious daughter, Mckindree, or Kin, received a bone marrow transplant at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Since Mckindree was diagnosed with Diamond Black Fan Anemia, a disorder of the bone marrow, at age twelve, they have poured everything they have into their daughter’s health-heart, body, mind, time, soul, and money.
As you can imagine, six months in the hospital has racked up millions in medical bills. Her health comes at a hefty price. Co-pays, out of pocket minimums, insurance premiums, and even gas driving to and from the hospital add up quickly.
But as a caring and generous community, we have the ability to ease the financial burden weighing so heavily on their family. If you have ever asked Aimee or Jye, “What can I do?”, “How can I help?” ,or “What do you need?”, this is what you can do, how you can help, and what they need most. Having a transplant is hard enough without the addition of a financial strain.
So please, give what you can, say a prayer, send your love, and know that you have made the Patton’s journey a little less difficult. And that is a priceless gift.
