Girls Leadership Empowerment And Development for Change or Girls LEAD Change is a community based nonprofit organization working in the interest of girls in disadvantaged communities. Concerned about negative social factors that hinder girls’ academic and social success, Girls LEAD Change provides gender specific youth development education, support, guidance, and advocacy for the progress of girls primarily in underserved communities in the U.S. and Africa.
Our mission is to advance the status of women in society by empowering adolescent girls with life skills and leadership education so that they are able to combat negative social barriers in order to reach their highest potential as self-reliant women.
There is a tremendous need for youth mentoring and guidance programs in disadvantaged communities, especially for adolescent girls in the African immigrant and African American communities.
Adolescent girls in these underserved communities struggle to focus on the right direction in life; they need supportive structures and positive role models to keep them safe and on the right track.
Adolescent girls are especially at risk in these communities. Baltimore, for instance, is one of the places with high rates of teen pregnancy in the U.S.
It is a well-documented fact that teen pregnancy can lead to a high level of school dropout rates ; and that school dropout increases the probability for a girl to face social and economic difficulty in the future.
With the prevalence of these risk factors, underserved communities need as many constructive programs for female youth as possible. Girls LEAD Change is well positioned to take a lead in helping to reduce girls' vulnerability to risk factors through our B’More DIAMONDS Girls Circle program.
To make this possible, Girls LEAD Change is counting on the generousity of concerned individuals, businesses and institutions to help raise the necessary funds through this campaign.
We are asking for your donations of all sizes to help pay for the venue, food, drinks and supplies. By reaching our campaign goal, we will be able to enroll the maximum number of girls to participate in this fun-filled, life-changing, educational retreat.
