Essay Contest on Suicide Prevention

Donation protected
In spite of having a population of under three quarters of a million people, Guyana has the highest suicide rate in the world and the majority of those who commit suicide are between the age  of 13 and 25. As some one who was born in Guyana (I'm now an educator in New York City), and committed to reversing this trend, I recently  launched a suicide prevention campaign with some concerned others (https://www.facebook.com/groups/suicideepidemic/). Our campaign includes monthly outreach workshops; training seminars for grass root responders; monthly seminars on social issues; walks and rallies; erection of billboards; information dissemination through letters and articles in the media and collaboration with other NGOs on activism related to issues that impact suicide such as domestic abuse, teenage poregnancy and alcoholism. These activities are funded by our own contributions and contributions from our friends, families and supporters.
However, we also want to launch an essay contest for all schools in Guyana at both the primary and secondary levels and to offer prizes (first, second and third) to all regional winners (30) plus the three national winners. The idea behind the contest is to enable schools to talk about suicide and suicide prevention, to get students to engage in research, including primary sources, (in their communities) and to start a national discussion among young people about this problem, as a first step to taking preventative and protective actions.
Thus we are seeking to raise $5000, to fund the contest - planning, implementation, evaluation of essays and presentation of prizes. Please help us bring this contest to fruition. Please help us help young people to understand that suicide is not the answer. Please help us save lives.
Thank you.
