Chimp Sanctuary in Path of Ebola

The Ebola virus is wreaking havoc in West Africa, including the nation of Sierra Leone. It is affecting humans and is moving in the direction of a wonderful ape sanctuary which houses chimpanzees rescued from trade.
One of these chimpanzees is sweet baby Fina, seen above, who recently suffered from a bout of meningitis from which she has recovered after weeks of intensive treatment.
The sanctuary’s name is Tacugama and it is home to nearly 100 chimpanzees. All these animals were rescued from illegal trade or people who owned them as “pets.” They are cared for by a wonderful African and international staff led by Bala Amaraskaram. These brave men and woman are true heroes risking their lives for their beloved chimpanzee charges.
The chimpanzees don’t live in cages but in spacious electric-fenced enclosures.
The sanctuary feeds a wonderful diet to its residents. But now that Ebola has struck Sierra Leone, it is very difficult to bring food in. It is difficult to get fuel for trucks.
Because of the outbreak, people can’t get into or out of Sierra Leone. Tacugama’s wonderful eco-lodges, once a major source of revenue for the sanctuary, lie empty. Visitors and volunteers have cancelled their bookings.
We just heard from Bala that,
“Situation here is deteriorating! The number of new Ebola cases continues to rise. Especially in the Western Area, where Tacugama is situated. Many districts are quarantined and movement of people and goods are restricted. Supply of essential commodities are running low and prices are going up. People are really struggling. Help is arriving but still extremely slow. At the moment, Ebola is winning the fight!”
We have to help Bala and the chimpanzees through this crisis. They need funds for food, transportation, and vet supplies.
