I'd love to tell you first, about Kelly Joy Shannon (and NOT her cancer). I have never known someone to be so incredibly beautiful...hair or no hair. Kelly is warm, and wonderful. She immediately makes everyone feel welcome and comfortable. She has a soul that is so open and full of positive energy. She is an amazing listener, with a big bright smile that belongs in the pages of a magazine.
She is also a dedicated mother, moving mountains for her boys (Cooper, 6, Carson, almost 5). Kelly has endured trial after trial in the past three years with a rare beauty and grace. She deserves an exceptional miracle. Let's make that happen for her.
In 2011, Kelly developed a persistent cough and after multiple visits to the doctor, misdiagnoses, and ineffective courses of treatments, tumors were discovered in both of her lungs in January 2012. This beautiful, healthy, young mother of two received the devastating diagnosis of Stage 4 Non-Small Cell, non-smokers Lung Cancer.
Since diagnosis, Kelly has endured several grueling regimens of chemotherapy with inconsistent results, and a painful and unexpected divorce just five months after beginning treatment. The process of divorce was a huge shock that caused additional emotional stress and pain during the early phases of her treatment. It has been a struggle to care for her children and a household on her own while undergoing cancer treatment.
After exhausting her treatment options at her local cancer center in Rochester, Kelly has been traveling weekly to Memorial Sloan-Kettering in NYC for an experimental type of chemotherapy. The treatment is currently keeping her tumors stable, for which she feels gratitude and relief.
The constant travel has been extremely difficult for Kelly and the boys, but she is willing to do anything! She is determined to have as many years as possible with her children, and still holds out hope she will get her miracle.
Kelly has been nothing but an inspirational example of hope, courage, love and determination for the past three years, however, the emotional and financial stress are starting to take a toll on her typically positive attitude.
We're hoping to raise enough money to alleviate many of the financial struggles Kelly is encountering around paying for weekly necessities such as daycare, travel to NYC, and general household expenses. As the financial stress mounts, Kelly has less energy and time to focus on her fight. Let's raise enough money to ease her financial burdens. Once that happens, Kelly can relax...focus on herself, and kick cancer's butt!
