SOA Trip
Please help send eight students from Holy Names University to the School of the Americas (SOA) Vigil and Peaceful Protest at Fort Benning, GA, November 20-23, 2014. For the past 10 years students from Holy Names University have attended this important vigil. In addition to attending the vigil and protest, students visit Birmingham, Alabama, the cradle of the civil rights movement in the 1950’s and 60’s. We will visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the 16th St. Baptist Church and Kelly Ingram Civil Rights Sculpture Park. We then continue over to Montgomery to visit the Rosa Parks Museum and the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Civil Rights Memorial before arriving for the protest/vigil at Ft. Benning, Georgia.
By providing these types of opportunities to our students, we expand their worldview beyond Oakland and help them to understand local and global issues of justice at a deeper level. We also hope empower the students to develop leadership skills so that they can be leaders in their communities, beyond Holy Names University!
The total cost of this trip is about $ 8,000.00. This includes airfare, lodging, food, rental vans and tickets for the civil rights museums. We thank you in advance for any assistance you are able to provide.
