Help Me Serve in Boston This Year

Hello, my name is Ernesto Villaseñor, and I'm Straight Outta Compton! I say it with such pride and honor, not just because this is the place that has made me who I am now, but also as a way of breaking down stigmas and stereotypes associated with both the city and the people who live in this marvelous community!

The oldest of Mexican parents, growing up and living in Compton was not the life my parents wanted to give me, but was the life vital and important to the creation of my foundation. Growing up in poverty and in violence, statistically speaking, I should have remained within Compton either as a gang member or a drop-out working a dead-end job, but instead, I've persevered to become the first in my family to graduate both from high school and college. It was a privileged that was made possible thanks to the Gates Millennium Scholarship and to the countless of individuals who ensured that my endeavor for higher education became more than just a reality: it became an opportunity for me to give back not just to my community, but also to serve as a catalyst for positive, sustainable, and progressive change among underprivileged communities, which is why I have created this GoFundMe campaign.

Recently, I have been granted the Massachusetts Promise Fellowship as a Fellow with the Massachusetts Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health (MassCOSH), working directly with underserved youth in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston. Not only will I be working with youth on achieving their goals of accessing and turning higher education into a reality, I will also be working with them to serve as leaders and fighters for social justice in issues pertaining to labor rights and public health access.

This is a dream that is almost a reality, yet moving out from Los Angeles to Boston is costly to say the least, which is why I am asking for you not just for financial assistance, but for an investment in creating, sustaining, and cultivating progressive growth in underprivileged communities. Funding for this campaign will cover as many of the expenses associated with relocating to Boston from Los Angeles: housing (rent deposit and security); transportation costs associated with moving out to Boston (driving is much more cost-effective than is flying, as this will minimize the amount of things that need to be purchased for my apartment); food expenses for the first month in Boston; and program material coverage for the first month in Boston.

Each dollar invested into my dream will help ensure it become a reality, allowing me to serve youth who have gone through similar paths of survival as that which I have walked through. Can I count on your help?

I will forever be grateful and thankful for your assistance.

Yours Truly,

Ernesto
